This lacquer container dates from around 1915, it has been hand painted over the black lacquer work. The lacquer used is the sap tapped from the varnish tree Melanorrhoea usitata  or Thitsee that grows wild in the forests of Burma. This container design is rare and the handles are often broken, therefore pieces such as this are scarce. The handle of the lid is a peacock which has great historical significance and is still the national emblem today. The Lacquer condition of this box is near original, there is a tiny hairline crack on one side of one handle which is hardly visible. 18.5 cm (handle to handle) x 11cm x  9.5 cm high
