Andamooka is located N/W of Adelaide . This opal field produces a variety of opal types including limestone impregnated with precious opal known in the jewellery trade as matrix . This limestone is treated with sugar and sulphuric acid to make a dark based opal . The sugar solution impregnates into the slightly porous opal and carbonises to a deep black when soaked in sulphuric acid . Andamooka matrix opal is somewhat similar to natural black opal in appearance depending on the amount and quality of opal in the limestone . This opal can cut stunning stones that are far more affordable than untreated black opal
