Mamuli are part of a family's heirlooms, believed to gain ancestral powers as they are passed along from generation to generation. They were historically worn only on ceremonial occasions, although today they are worn by both men and women, often as necklaces, but with the same reverence for their ancestral meaning. This lovely elegant pair of mamulis are supposedly made from old Dutch coins or guilders. These stylised mamulis are from Lamalera Village on Lambata Island, Eastern Indonesia. We have a story on our blog about our adventure to this amazing Island.
